Press Release Summary: Network Attached Storage products receive improved firmware for increased capacity and Active Directory / Vista Support
Press Release Body: 26 February 2008 - SMC Networks (www.smc.com), a leading provider of LAN hardware and broadband connectivity devices, is offering improved firmware for its SMCNAS04 / SMCNAS24 Network Attached Storage servers. The upgrade provides support for Active Directory, Windows Vista and Network File System (NFS) whilst increasing the maximum capacity, performance and stability.
Through Active Directory support, the upgrade allows users to link the NAS server to a Windows Server domain where its active directory can be used to control user rights on the NAS. This eliminates the need to configure each user manually by providing central authentication and authorisation services for Windows based computers. Active Directory also enables administrators to assign policies, deploy software, and apply critical updates.
Furthermore, the upgrade provides Windows Vista support, which assures that the products are interoperable with Microsoft Windows Vista products and will permit the NAS server to operate and share files with Windows Vista clients. File sharing with Linux and UNIX clients is also made possible with the upgrade's NFS support.
Hard disc drive endurance has been boosted to offer support for up to 4TB of storage using the latest 1TB hard disks. The upgrade also ensures enhanced performance and stability and includes a Bit torrent Download Client interface that means users can manage and share downloaded files.
The new firmware supports SMC Networks' two high-performance TigerStore NAS servers, SMCNAS04 and SMCNAS24, which offer gigabit network connectivity and up to 4TB of Networked Storage. With these complete storage solutions for SMB and home network environments, network users can easily access and share data files, music, pictures and videos.
"SMC Networks is committed to providing high performance networking with full interoperability and support," said Olaf Olinger, Product Manager, SMC Networks. "The new firmware upgrade ensures that our NAS products meet the highest standards for both objectives."
SMC Networks has also extended its offering to Mac users, with a new installation utility available for the Apple Mac OS X. The utility, which will be shipped with all new products, is designed to simplify the process for Mac users and will be available as a separate download on www.smc.com.
